What is a Favicon?
A Favicon is a ‘FAVourite ICON’ which is associated with a particular website or webpage. The icon is a 16x16px image that sits in the address bar next to the URL.

Why are Favicons important?
Favicons provide a visual representation of a website on a user's bookmarks. Creative use of Favicons can help a site standout on the bookmark list and draw attention to the brand identity, establishing communication with the user.

Design considerations for Favicons
16 x 16px square – it’s small but when used well can have a huge impact

Clarity – with a small space the image needs to be simple and contrasting from the background to create standout

Branding – the Favicon needs to be in keeping with the branding on the site/page to keep the identity of the site on the bookmarks.

Creating an icon matching the above criteria can be tricky, finding the perfect balance between a simple design which encapsulates the essence of the site and brand. Once you have found the balance the results can be iconic (excuse the pun!), check out our Favicons…
