How to optimise your site for mobile devices

Posted on Monday, March 02, 2009

2009 is set to become the year when internet browsing on mobile devices really takes off. At the end of 2008 there were over 7 million users recorded in the UK, up 1.5 million on the previous quarter. A combination of improved handsets and a decrease in mobile internet charges means that mobile browsing is fast becoming an important consideration when it comes to webdesign.

There are a number of pitfalls to avoid to ensure that your website is compatible with mobile devices. For example, make sure your site doesn't rely on javascript or Flash to work, and if it does, make sure there is an alternative solution provided in the event that they aren't supported.

YellowTail CMS offers a simple solution to ensure that your website renders correctly on mobile devices. With YellowTail's portal creator and microsite management system it is easy to make a simplified version of your site that contains all the same content as your main site, but is optimised specifically for mobile devices. Then simply choose whether you want mobile users to be directed there automatically (as Hotmail.com and Facebook.com do), or whether you want to give the user the option to select the mobile version of the site.
